When in Rome: A Guide to the Eternal City
Hello again! Gabe here, this time with a guide to Rome, Italy! I will cover just some of the most popular and recognizable sights in Rome. Hope you enjoy!
The Colosseum
The Colosseum is probably the most well known symbol of Rome, and is definitely worth a visit regardless of the major crowds that descend upon the sight during peak season. A visit to the Colosseum provides one with an awe inspiring experience in what was once the largest arena in the Roman empire. Built between 72 and 80AD, a visit to the Colosseum leaves one wondering how this massive structure was built in a time where advanced building technologies such as lifts, cranes, and lighter building materials did not exist. Plus, a visit to the Colosseum provides some wonderful photo opportunities to remind you of your Italian adventure!
The Vatican
The Vatican is sure to be high on just about everyone's to do list when visiting Rome, and for good reason! A visit to St. Peter's square which is often depicted on tv or in movies, puts into perspective just how large the square actually is. St. Peter's Basilica is worth a visit, even if you're not Catholic; the lavish interior is quite a sight, with the walls being adorned from floor to ceiling, domes covered in decoration, opulent archways, and marble floors. The Vatican museums and Sistine chapel are also well worth a visit, however photography is strictly prohibited in the latter; however you can stay as long as you would like to take in the beautifully painted ceilings, courtesy of Michelangelo. You will not be disappointing with a visit to the Vatican during your time in Rome!Other Points of Interest Around Rome
While there are two major sights, there are also some less popular points of interest around the city that are most certainly worth a visit! Firstly, the Trevi Fountain; it is said that if you throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain, then you will come back to Rome (that's a saying most people actually wish to come true!). The Pantheon is another Roman sight worth a visit, what was originally a Roman temple when it was completed some time around 126 AD, is in modern times a church, and a mainstay on sightseeing itineraries through Rome. The Arch of Titus and the Arch of Constantine are also noteworthy points in Rome, and are easily visited (and visible) from the Colosseum. All of the sights and places listed here are sure to absolutely make your visit to Rome a memorable one!
