An Afternoon in Barcelona's Park Guell

Hello again! It's Gabe here, and today I have an in-depth look at one of Barcelona's most popular tourist attractions, Park Guell!

Park Background

The park was built in the early 1900s, officially opening in 1926. The park was Eusebi Guell, who assigned the architectural design of the park to the renown Antoni Gaudi. Early on the park was envisioned to be a housing development, as there was a wave of urbanization in Catalan at this time. However, this housing plan proved to be unsuccessful, and Park Guell has become a municipal park, and has become one of Barcelona's premier landmarks and tourist attractions.

Walk Around the Park

It was a sunny late-afternoon in mid-June with a nice warm breeze, the Park Guell opened its gates to a variety of visitors from all over, including myself. We first took a walk around the park grounds, really the free section, and we found ourselves walking a myriad of paths that lead all over the park grounds. Some paths climbed the hills within the park, while others went around and found some interesting architectural aspects. This are of the park showed us a variety of wonderful views!
In the free portion of the park, one can find some spectacular views of the city, complete with the Mediterranean Sea!

Upon entrance to the monumental zone, which is the paid admission potion of the park, one is met with a whole collection of architectural masterpieces. It is instantly noticeable how intricate everything is, from the stone pillars to the mosaics seemingly around every corner, it is quite marvelous!
Some of the pillars and a bit of mosaic work

Continuing through the monumental area, one also notices some very "Barcelona" aspects, the kinds of pictures you see associated with the city. This includes the buildings near the monumental area entrance, some of which you can enter, the mosaic lizard (which gets very crowded at peak times). Probably the most iconic aspect of the park, and a huge tourist draw is the terrace, this beautifully intricate terrace, of which the walls are lined with colorful mosaics, provides a superb view of the city, as you can see below it is possible to include the mosaic terrace wall, some greenery, Gaudi architecture, the city, and the sea in the distance all into one photo.
