A Trip Around the Baltic: Copenhagen, Denmark

Hello there! Welcome back to our whirlwind trip around the Baltic region of Europe! Today we will be in Copenhagen. If you would like to take a look at some pictures of the places we will visit today, check out one of my previous posts here.

Copenhagen Overview

Copenhagen is a wonderful city, situated right on the water, which means there is a substantial maritime influence. Copenhagen is one of the world's most bicycle friendly cities, with dedicated bike lanes on just about every single street in the city, bicycle stands at just about every street corner, bicycles for rent to out-of-towners, and various bicycle shops throughout the city. Copenhagen is also known for it's design-scene, which thrives upon the stereotypical minimalist Scandinavian feel.

Copenhagen Must-do

If you only have a short time in Copenhagen, or just want to take in the most popular sights, that's exactly what this section will do! One of the most recognizable Copenhagen residents is the Little Mermaid, the Little mermaid statue sits along the waterfront, surrounded by a pebbly beach; I would recommend you check out the Little Mermaid first thing in the morning, or in the evening, as crowds will be lower, and you will have a better chance of getting a photo free of strangers. Another quintessential Copenhagen location is Tivoli Gardens, which is located right across the street from Copenhagen Central Station, where you can catch the train, metro, or bus to various spots around the city, Tivoli is a place that I would recommend visiting at any time of the day, as there are various restaurants, shopping, shows, and rides to keep everyone busy. Another must do in Copenhagen is Rosenborg Slot, this is one of the more famous castles in Copenhagen, where visitors can view the crown jewels of Denmark. I would recommend this be visited in early morning, to avoid crowds. Our last Copenhagen must do is the Nyhavn, which is translated to new harbor, is actually the former port area of Copenhagen, that is now a nice area to walk along, enjoy a meal, or just take in the wonderful-ness that is Copenhagen!

More off the radar Copenhagen

If you have more time in Copenhagen, or want to do some of the less stereotypical visitor things, then this section is for you. Firstly, I would suggest Amalienborg Palace, which is where the Danish royal family currently lives, and visitors can take in a museum filled with Danish royalty history. Another off the radar suggestion that I have is the Rundentaarn, which is a round tower built in the city during the 17th century. There is a spiral ramp to the top of the tower, where one is awarded great views of the city! A visit to some of the churches in the city are also slightly more off the radar; Copenhagen has many fantastic churches to visit, including the Marble Church also known as Frederik's church, the Copenhagen Cathedral, and the Church of our Savior. Copenhagen also is home to some wonderful museums including the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek and the National Museum of Denmark.

Thanks for joining us on our tour of wonderful Copenhagen! As always leave a comment below, and remember to join us next week for our stop in Germany!
